Humane Education Update

We’ve been having a great summer bringing our Humane Education program, developed by Lisa Potiker, to LA’s BEST Summer Program. The program has grown since last year and is now a three-part series, where we visit each classroom three times to reinforce and build upon the lessons of compassion, responsibility, problem-solving, and taking action.

As part of the program, the kids wrote letters asking for donations to make toys for shelter pets and received donations from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (fabric and yarn) and Disney (tennis balls). They also participated in a shelter visit role play, drew pictures, and wrote what they learned. The kids have been so receptive to this approach.  They LOVE the program and want to make a difference.

Lori, one of our volunteer presenters, said, “The letters make them think about what a dog or cat in the shelter may like to have and making the toys helps them see the outcome of their efforts. Also, going to the same school three times gives us a better opportunity to follow up and answer questions and make sure they all get a spay/neuter certificate. When I went back to Grand View for the second time, a girl told me her Dad called Bark Avenue about getting their cats fixed, so that was very encouraging.”

This month we visited North Central Animal Control Center with some of our Summer Program students and their families. The kids were excited to give the toys they had made with the donations from FIDM and Disney to the animals and see them light up. Shelters are not great places for animals, with limited resources and frequent over-crowding, but it makes such a difference for them to have things like toys to brighten their days and give them something to do while they wait for their forever homes. Next month we will visit Harbor Animal Control Center!

As we wind down the summer program, we are in need of volunteer presenters for the fall term of Humane Education and would love to have YOU on board! If you’re interested, please contact christy@barkavenuefoundation.orgfor more information. No experience is necessary, the time commitment is however little or much you make it, and we will give you all the training and materials you need.
