Unsheltered People & Pets

Bark Avenue Foundation is committed to helping the growing population of homeless & at-risk people and Veterans in the Los Angeles area and their beloved pets stay together safely. Pets of homeless and at-risk people are their family, companions, and security during this challenging chapter of their lives. The 2017 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count reports that 57,794 people are experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, and on any given night in Los Angeles County, 42,828 people go unsheltered. This is up 23% from 2016. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, about 10% of homeless people have pets.

Shelter space for the homeless population is already limited, and very few shelters or transitional housing programs allow people to bring their pets or provide alternative options to provide care or boarding for them. BAF has developed the Unsheltered People & Pets (UPP) program to address the need for support within this vulnerable community and to keep pets with their families when they need each other most.
