Every month we host 2-3 Free & Low-Cost spay/neuter clinics in Whittier, East LA, and Pasadena. We’re often fortunate enough to be able to fix multiple pets that live within a household, but sometimes unfortunately people do not get their pets to us in time, and they end up pregnant or in worse trouble. That’s what happened with Baca, a sweet pup who went through a lot of unnecessary suffering, but was lucky to have an advocate in a concerned neighbor.
The family that used to have Baca had five dogs, one male and four females. All of these pups lived outside together and were unfixed, so as you can imagine, they had multiple litters of puppies, many of whom sadly died, and the rest of which were sold or given away. The family had slowly been bringing the dogs to our clinics to get fixed, but didn’t bring the male before he’d gotten Baca pregnant again, and she gave birth to one live puppy and one stillborn.
It was heartbreaking for the neighbor to continue to watch this happen, especially in the hot summer weather, so she offered to foster Baca and her surviving pup. She had no idea what she was getting herself into, and quickly realized there might be more unborn babies. She called us and we told her we’d cover the cost but she had to get Baca to the vet immediately, which she did. The vet removed her uterus and more stillborn pups. Since Baca was still very weak, the foster family needed to supplement formula and bottle-feed her baby.
Baca and her baby were so lucky to have this concerned neighbor looking out for them and rescuing them from a grisly situation. This is why we are so strong in our advocacy for spay/neuter. No animals should suffer like this! Both Baca and baby are recovering well, but the medical bills, expensive food for Baca to recover, and formula for baby have rung up a very steep price tag. If you want to contribute to Baca and Baby’s care and ensure that we can help more pets in need, please make a donation.
